Community Wealth Building: A Community-led approach to care at home in rural Scotland

Community Wealth Building: A Community-led approach to care at home in rural Scotland

Participants will hear from Miriam McKenna, Programme Manager: Inequality and Economy at the Improvement Service who will give a brief overview of Community Wealth Building in Scotland.

Following Miriam, Dr Susan Warren will talk about SKS Scotland’s work with the communities of Rannoch, and Dunkeld and Birnam in North Perthshire, which has focused on finding a solution to the inequality of access to care at home and other social care services experienced by these rural, remote communities.

Through a co-creative approach, a new local charity, Heartland Cares, has now been established, which will provide care at home, befriending, hospital transport and other services across these communities.

This new venture is a great example of community wealth building in action, placing local people at the centre of decision making, creating investment into the local area and providing new jobs and training opportunities for local people.

Support for the work to develop this approach was provided by Perth and Kinross CLLD Fund, and the initial infrastructure set up and operational costs are being funded by Perth and Kinross HSCP and NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation.
