Workshops to encourage diversity in community councils

News story posted: 23/08/2016

ELREC logoTo coincide with upcoming community council elections in Edinburgh and the Lothian areas, Edinburgh & Lothians Regional Equality Council (ELREC) is hosting workshops and drop-in sessions to encourage black, minority, and ethnic (BME) members of the community to stand for election.

Community councils act as a voice for their area and should represent a full cross-section of the community and encourage the involvement of people regardless of gender, race, age, disability, nationality or sexual orientation, without prejudice.

ELREC has been working on Diversity in Public Life project since last year, which aims to increase participation of the BME community in public life and in the democratic process. The project is funded by the Scottish Government to work with the diverse communities around Edinburgh and the Lothians. ELREC recently hosted a diversity event in partnership with Granton and District Community Council, a report for this event can be found at https://diversityinpubliclife.wordpress.com/cc-event-reports/
