Democracy Pioneers Fund

News story posted: 21/01/2020

looking for new ideas to improve democracy and participationINNOVATION charity Nesta is currently inviting applications to its £100,000 Democracy Pioneers fund which aims to seek out organisations and projects experimenting with bold and creative ways to improve democracy and civic participation in the UK.

The Democracy Pioneers fund will see the charity award 10 grants of £10,000 each to projects that champion emerging innovations that are reshaping democracy and civic participation ensuring that democracy is not reduced to simply placing a tick in a box twice a decade.

Pioneering projects are being sought that challenge fake news and enable people to express their views using digital tools in order to encourage conversations.

Applications are being invited from constituted organisations and all sizes and sectors will be considered including community groups, registered charities, start-ups and universities.

Vicki Sellick, Executive Director of Innovation Programmes at Nesta, said: “One thing is clear: people are crying out for ways to express their views, passions and positions in a way that is heard and acted upon, more frequently than at the ballot box every five years. The Democracy Pioneer Awards aim to stimulate participatory, open, and engaging conversations, where many more people feel part of building their community.”

Successful applicants will not only receive £10,000 to support the development of their projects but also have opportunities to work with Nesta and other Democracy Pioneers to showcase their work and ideas via Nesta communications and also across a variety of local and national media.

The deadline for applications is Friday 31st January 2020 at 12 Noon.

Proposals can be submitted via Nesta’s website.
